Two day courses can be split. Saturday will be
devoted to essential skills of learning and practicing navigation using
map, compass, altimeter. GPS essentials will be introduced. Take and
follow bearings, travel on natural routes. Sunday
will be an advanced course for those with some experience in navigation.
Topics include:
- setting up and using a GPS with and without a map.
- integration of navigation tools for advanced problem solving
- international travel using ONC and TPC charts and other maps
- evacuation route selection
- avalanche terrain planning
Both days include lectures, video presentations,
hands-on practice, field experience and plenty of question and answer
time. Syllabus, map and compass provided. GPS
receivers will be loaned during both courses. Participants are encouraged
to learn with their own receiver if they have one.
